NAMING THE LOST—a community public art memorial

NAMING THE LOST—a community public art memorial to victims of the COVID-19 pandemic—returns to Green-Wood. Come to our Main Entrance at 25th Street and Fifth Avenueand linger on the sidewalk to view contributions from twenty-two community partners adorning the Cemetery’s fence. This year’s installation, A BIG, SLOW, MAJESTIC COVID MEMORIAL, Is presented in partnership between NAMING THE LOST Memorials, City Lore, Great Small Works, Mano a Mano, and The Green-Wood Cemetery, with grant funding from the Mellon Foundation. On view NOW through June 3rd.And join us on Sunday, May 19th, from 4pm to 5pm for a dedication and ACTIVATION CEREMONY of the memorial in front of Green-Wood’s Historic Chapel. The ceremony will bring together the artistic and curatorial team and community partners for an evening that will include a procession, second line, traditional singers, and a participatory ritual of remembrance. “I am back in The Green-Wood Cemetery, creating

“I am back in The Green-Wood Cemetery, creating a new site specific work in its Historical Chapel. I am observing stones … Using my body as a conduit to connect stones and places, I am looking at this cemetery anew. My journey continues.” — artist Eiko Otake in the @brooklynrailCome to Green-Wood June 26th through 29th, for STONE I, @eiko_otake and Margaet Leng Tan’s interdisciplinary collaboration. A June 2023 visit to the Gylsboda Quarry in Sweden by Eiko prompted reflection on the “machine-scarred surfaces of stones that I was not supposed to be seeing.” Back in New York, she created a video project that will cover the stone walls of our Historic Chapel, providing the setting for a performance and contemplation on the immensity of time, tension, and density that stone holds. In this collaboration, Eiko invited Margaret to reflect with her on humans’ incessant need for material resources, a need invariably destructive to the environment. Departing from their traditional roles as dancer and pianist, the collaborators sustain each other through sound and movement. 📸 EIko Otake at Green-Wood Cemetery, 2020.
